Earthquake/Evacuation Drill

The Core Routine: Drop, Cover, and Hold
  • DROP to the ground immediately.
  • TAKE COVER under a sturdy desk or table, keeping heads close to knees. If no shelter is available (like in a hallway or auditorium), drop next to an interior wall or between aisles and protect the back of the neck with linked hands.
  • HOLD ON to the table leg. Cover your eyes and face with your free arm. If the furniture moves, move with it.
  • FACE AWAY from windows and avoid heavy shelves or objects that could fall.
  • COUNT ALOUD to 60. This helps keep students calm, as earthquakes rarely last longer than a minute.
Location-Specific Rules
  • If Inside: Stay inside. Prop your classroom door open to prevent it from jamming shut in a real emergency. Do not run through the halls or outside.
  • If Outside: Stay outside. Move to an open area away from the building and overhead power lines, then crouch low to the ground.
Teacher Action Plan
  • During Shaking: Shout "Drop, Cover, and Hold!" and take immediate self-protective action alongside your students.
  • When Shaking Stops: Calm and reassure your students, then take roll immediately to account for everyone. Keep your attendance list handy. If you receive instructions to leave, follow standard Evacuation Procedures.

WE WILL TRANSITION STRAIGHT FROM AN EARTHQUAKE DRILL TO AN EVACUATION DRILL:
Fire alarm will be pulled. Please wait for someone to announce "Evacuate, Evacuate, Evacuate".

Pie in the Face

Please send Katie and Ty the name of the person chosen by each grade level to pie them in the face. Once the evacuation drill is cleared, we will migrate to the location in the map below so that all students will be able to see the Pie in the Face.

HMH Routines

These are all at the front of your Teacher Editions, but I just want to bring light to them as there are some amazing resources in here. There are also routines for everything, including blending boards with multi-syllabic words (page R49).

HM Halloween Activities K-5

HERE is a very fun PDF with some Halloween activities for all grades from Teacher's Corner in HMH. Some great ways to engage our learners in reading.

NAs on Report Cards

As we’re gearing up for Trimester 1 report cards, I wanted to make sure everyone has heard this information. You may notice that there are no gray boxes/ NA for the ELA section. Due to our adoption of HMH Into Reading - we have a new ELA tool. As you all are feeling, the tool may have changed the pacing for some of our ELA standards. For this year, building teams will determine the best pacing for the priority standards in connection to the new tool. Please follow the guidance outlined below:
  • Determine which standards you are grading this trimester and which standards you need to NA, as a grade-level  team. You’ll repeat this process for the 2nd trimester. ALL standards are assessed  the third trimester.
  • Only add NA to a standard if you have not started instruction, or have not taught long enough to assess any targets from that standard.
  • Here is an optional parent letter to send home with report cards (or in a message) explaining standards based grading:: KSD MASTER STANDARDS BASED GRADING PARENT LETTER

Reminder for math NAs: Those are still there according to the report card. The NA's won't show up on PowerSchool, however, they will appear on the report card. Please refer to your report card to know where they will be placed.

Amira Reports: On Demand

As you begin to give on-demands (if you choose), here are a few reports to check into to find some good data for your students. They should all update and share the latest reports from On-Demands:

  • Subtest Scores
  • Student Summary Report: If you click on Tracking Metrics, it will show you the percentage the student got correct in each area tested.
  • Student Mastery Report (just FYI, this is the report we'll be using next year as the "original" ISIP reports will be going away).
  • Reading Ropes
